Feeling a lot better than last night, though. Will probably be back at work tomorrow.

Still feeling all woe is me, regardless.

On a happy note. My baby brother just got engaged this afternoon!!

YAAAY!

Can't Sleep

Tossed and turned most of the night and this is me giving up.

Too much on my mind I guess. Been thinking about this year too much and you know what? I’m really glad it’s over. This has been an absolutely horrible year for myself and most people I know.

There has been a few bright spots, of course…

I don’t know tumblr. We haven’t reached that point of such depth in our relationship yet. Xanga and I were together since 2002. It’ll take awhile.

I just hope that this year I don’t feel like I’m disappointing others. I also hope that my heart doesn’t get broken again (because this year was ruthless.) I hope I get a new job. I hope I have the opportunity to finish grad school. I hope I lose a little weight (ok I don’t really need to, I just want to.) I hope I discover a ton of new music. I hope I am able to keep up with all the new and amazing friends I met this year. I hope I get to drink a lot more porch beers in Becky’s new and improved back yard. I hope I get to take a couple of trips somewhere, anywhere really. I hope that I learn how to trust others. I hope I make really good decisions this year. I hope I become more conscious and considerate of others and the world around me. I hope I read more. I hope that Kings of Convenience tours again.

and I really really hope I can sleep soon.

Emanuel Ungaro Tree Heels...I want!!

Emanuel Ungaro Tree Heels...I want!!

I had a dream last night...

I come from a really small town. Population of about 4,000 people. Nothing ever happens here. People don’t lock their doors. People let their kids play in the street. Everyone knows everyone. When something does happen, EVERYONE knows about it. Crime, gossip, etc. Everyone knows.

I had a dream last night. I was back home in that small town. I was going into the cabinet at my parents house to grab a plate for dinner. I brought my hand out of the cabinet and my hand was covered in globby pancake batter.

My mom exclaimed, “dear GOD! The pancake batter bandit has struck at our house.”

The newest crime in town was that some bandit would open peoples cabinets and put pancake batter all over their clean plates.

Uhh. ok.

Andrew Bird @ 4th Presbyterian

I did not take these photos.

Words cannot even express how incredible this show was. There could not have been a more perfect setting that I could imaging seeing Mr. Bird in. (well besides the show at Schubas earlier this year.) No I take that back. This show was so much more incredible because it was filled with sounds I may have never heard before and may never hear again…

He did play several tracks I knew…Natural Disaster, Effigy, Sectionate City…a few tracks from Mysterious Production of Eggs that I know by sound but not by name.

There is something about seeing him live and hearing the sound that comes out of those giant gramophones (if that’s what they are called) that is just…something that leave me speechless. When he loops so many tracks of string that it sounds like one giant symphony of sound, I just get lost. I get moved. The sound is so deep and so rich that I can hardly take it in. Watching him is like watching a mad musical scientist on stage creating, manipulating, and I can’t help but smile every time he helicopters that bow over his head to set the gramophone spinning.

I loved hearing him talk about his farm. I’d love to have the opportunity to see his farm someday and see where he creates such brilliant music. It’s only about 45 minutes from where I grew up and it’s in one of the most beautiful areas of the country, if not world, I’ve ever been to. It’s easy to see why he enjoys being there and how he is inspired by it. I’m pretty sure a lot of the photography from his album “Noble Beast” was taken out there.

I love the image of him, on his front porch, sitting by the light of a oil lamp creating, strumming…it makes me smile. Makes me long for something more simple in my life sometimes. A lot of his music makes me long for that place in the country that I call home.

Also.

I love to make lists. When I was in a boring class during grad school, I would present a facade of engagement by scribbling lists instead of class notes. I made lists of bands I’d see (long one), traffic tickets (also long), foods I don’t eat (short) and the hundred blocks of every major Chicago street from Madison to Howard (long-ish…and yeah, I know them all by heart). So when my beloved A&E editor at Chicagoist told me we wouldn’t be making any year-end or decade-end lists this year, I died just a little bit inside.

But I’m a resilient Bird, and I shall prevail. So here I am to make lists for you, unhindered by silly things like editors and deadlines. Sometimes I’ll explain my choices, sometimes I won’t. If you’re here, you’re good with the Webz so just look shit up.

Which one should I post first: Most Underrated Guitarists of the Aughties or The Most Embarrassing Albums I Really Liked (of the Aughties)?

Lists! Yes! I currently have a list of bands to check out, designers to by from, christmas presents to purchase, doctor’s appointments to make, etc. etc. the list goes on. A list of lists. What’s wrong with me!

This will never cease to be funny in the world of myself and my...

This will never cease to be funny in the world of myself and my little brother.

What to do?

So I just got a bonus of $100 for being the top sales person last month.
